The American automobile brand Dodge is a well known player in roads across continents for a long time. Based out of Michigan, Dodge has been a premier manufacturer of performance vehicles. Trucks and full-size passenger cars were the main products of Dodge. However, it also manufactured compact & mid-size cars.
Brief History of Dodge
The brothers Horace Elgin Dodge & John Francis Dodge set up the Dodge Brothers Company in the early days of the 20th century. The company was a supplier of automobile components & spare parts to premium automobile manufacturers like Ford. In 1914, the company took a step ahead and started to manufacture complete vehicles. It even preceded the global giant Chrysler Corporation in this regard.
The Dodge Brothers brand, established in 1914, kept on manufacturing large and mid-sized vehicles. However, tragedy struck the Dodge family in 1920 when both brothers passed away in the same year. The family sold off the business, and it was ultimately acquired by Chrysler Corporation in 1928 from an interim owner.
The Middle Years
In 1973, the oil embargo hit the US. And the automobile sector took a beating, especially the cars that consumed substantial fuel. This prompted Chrysler to try & develop alternative variants of vehicles. It initiated much R&D and the result was the Dodge Aries K Platform car, launched in 1981. This was a precursor to the various mid-size compact vehicles that Chrysler would launch in the years to come.
By introducing this model and also the Dodge Caravan, Chrysler saw a reversal in its fortunes. The Dodge Stratus was among the market leaders in the 1990s. The Dodge Intrepid was another hot favorite among the connoisseurs of larger vehicles.
The Later Years
In the 1990s, many more variants of Dodge were launched. The much-awarded Dodge Ram truck was among them. The later models like Neon & Stratus also were fairly successful. The SUV Dodge Durango was another star performer of the Dodge garage.
In 1998, Chrysler Corporation & Daimler-Benz AG merged to form Daimler Chrysler. The Dodge Avenger was one of the company’s top models at this time. Dodge would also be focusing more on performance vehicles in the days to come. It plans to do away with the Dodge Grand Caravan (after 3 decades) as well as the Avenger. 2020 onwards, Dodge has focused on its three main brands:
- Durango, and
Types of Cars by Dodge
Dodge has always been renowned for its trucks. They are durable, tough, and capable of negotiating even the roughest terrains. Their brand Dodge Ram is among the legends when it comes to trucks in the US. However, in later years, the Ram was branched off into a separate brand line. It retained the Dodge credentials but focused only on its core buyers – truckers.
Dodge has now shifted its focus from trucks & pickup vans to passenger vehicles. Its target crowd is mostly the cool, hip, young buyers. The Charger, Durango, and Challenger brands are priced in and around the $30,000-mark and are tough, rugged, yet very attractive. Coming with high horsepower, superfast pickup, and high torque, these cars promise a lot of muscle and ensure a smooth driving experience.
In the past, Dodge has also been involved in the SUV market with models like Ramcharger, Durango SUV, etc. But as of now, the Durango is the only SUV in its stable.
