History of Mack Trucks

The Early Years

The founder of the company, John Mack, who started working with the carriage & wagon manufacturer Fallesen & Berry, that was based in Brooklyn. This was in 1890. In 3 years, John & his brother Augustus bought over the firm. Along with their 3^rd brother William, they were involved in the manufacturing of steam & electric-powered vehicles.

In 1900, the brother came up with their first plant to manufacture top class buses. They established the company in 1902 in New York. Very soon, the company ventured into manufacturing locomotives & rail cars. The “Mack” brand was engraved on the vehicles from 1910 onwards.

Later in 1911, the Saurer Motors Truck Company decided to incorporate with the Mack Brothers Motor Car Company. The merged entity began selling heavy trucks under the name of International Motor Truck Company. In 1922, the name Mack Truck was given to the company. It also adopted the bulldog as its official symbol.

In the 1930s, Mack Truck was involved in several prestigious construction projects as well. Its vehicles demonstrated great efficiency in carrying construction materials on time & without damage. Mack had also entered the domain of manufacturing fire apparatus during the 1940s.

The Middle Years

Mack built a new manufacturing facility in Ontario, Canada, that further enhanced the quality of its trucks. In 1970, the company moved to its new headquarters in Allentown. In a decade’s time, Renault bought a 10% stake in the company. By 1983, the stake-holding increased to 40%, and in 1990, Mack Trucks was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the global auto giant Renault Vehicles Industries.

The Later Years

Mack continued to grow in the new millennium as well, carrying forward the legacy set by the Mack brothers a century ago. 2006 was a momentous year in the company’s history when it achieved never-before record sales. It also moved to its new headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2021, Mack has invested more than $80 million to upgrade its entire manufacturing facility at its Pennsylvania plant. In keeping with the requirement of the times, Mack has ventured into manufacturing electric trucks. Its first model, the Mack LR Electric, will soon hit the roads.
