History of Stellantis
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) was keen on a merger with Renault, the French automaker. The year was 2019 and a provisional agreement was reached as well. However, the deal had to be abandoned due to the French government’s behavior which was indicative of interference in the future. Besides, Nissan also had reservations about what repercussions the merger would have on its relations with Renault.
FCA (Fiat) then approached Peugeot SA, another France-based major automaker. The merger was agreed to officially in 2019 December and it created the world’s 4th largest carmaker in terms of global vehicle sales. The merger was also approved by the European Commission on December 21, 2020. It was on January 4, 2021, that shareholders from FCA as well as PSA approved the merger leading to the completion of the deal on January 16, 2021.
Thus, Peugeot SA merged with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. with the latter emerging as the surviving company after the merger was done. The newly emerged combined company was renamed Stellantis NV on January 17, 2021.
The company is now marching into the future having launched as many as 29 electric vehicle models at the end of 2021. In November 2021, a network of charging stations was started as well to promote electric vehicles, a testimony to the company’s commitment to saving the planet from vehicle emissions.
